Opportunities (AF: Iloilo 2010 and AF: Davao 2011)

Since He's Coming Broadcasting Network began, God has been widening our horizon by giving us opportunities to partner with other ministries around the world.  Lately, He has given us this wonderful opportunity to work with the widely known Amazing Facts Ministries.

Ptr. Lowell Hargreaves presents his wife, Sandra and children, Teresa and
Michael, during the last night of Amazing Facts: Davao

For two years now, Amazing Facts has been conducting one-month long Revelations Seminars in the Philippines. Ptr. Lowell Hargreaves, the seminar speaker, together with his wife, Sandra, and children Teresa and Michael represented the Amazing Facts Ministries. During these seminars, the HCBN has always been present for the coverage of the event.

God gave HCBN an opportunity to shoot for a children's series: Bible Treasures for the whole month of November.
Bible Treasures is aired in HCBN channel every Sundays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

When things get so hectic, just laugh it off!

A pose with Teresa, the kids, and the HCBN volunteers. Yes, AF: Iloilo was one of the most hectic schedules we ever had with an event to cover in the evening and shootings in the morning but the FUN and experience was priceless!

The first AF Revelations Seminar happened at Iloilo City on November 2010. This was supported by the SDA West Visayan Conference (WVC) under the leadership of Ptr. Ferdinand Esico who was the WVC president during this time and HCBN who covered the event. At the end of the seminar 264 souls were to be baptized.

And yes! We were able to shoot a cooking series show: Kitchen Treasures, with Dr. Blessinda Varona (2nd from the left) during the November of 2010. She is the author of the books: Cooking Smart and Healing Wonders of Diet and was one of the speakers for the Health Lectures during the AF: Iloilo and Davao Revelations Seminar.

Dr. Blessy can definitely jam!

Just recently, another AF Revelations seminar took place at Davao City and Samal Island which was still conducted by the same family--the Hargreaves family, on June 3 - July 9, 2011. Ptr. Lowell and daughter, Teresa, headed the nightly meetings in Davao City as main speaker and children's Bible teacher, respectively. As with Samal Island, Ptr. Lowell's son, Michael conducted the nightly seminars while his wife, Sandra, conducted the children's Bible school. With the help and support of SDA Davao Mission, under the leadership of Ptr. Jerry Patalinghug, the event turned-out to be a success with 281 souls baptized at the end of the event.

It was during the AF: Davao that the Lord once again pushed HCBN one notch higher when He made it possible for us to be able to stream live and one-day-delay broadcast (for the first time in HCBN's history!) the talks of Ptr. Lowell Hargreaves. God is good and able!

Racing with Time
As told by: Rowena Sandot, HCBN Volunteer
Date Happened: July 16-18, 2011

" If we surrender our lives to His service, we can never be placed in a position for which God has not made provision. Whatever may be our situation, we have a Guide to direct our way; whatever our perplexities, we have a sure Counselor; whatever our sorrow, bereavement, or loneliness, we have a sympathizing Friend. If in our ignorance we make missteps, Christ does not leave us...The arm of Omnipotence is outstretched to lead us onward and still onward. Go forward, the Lord says; I will send you help. It is for My name’s glory that you ask, and you shall receive. I will be honored before those who are watching for your failure. They shall see My word triumph gloriously. “All things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22.
- Christ's Object Lessons, p.173

I really praise God for the privilege to serve and for the opportunity to be one of the Cross Training facilitators of the recent MAS AMiCUS Iligan Chapter General Assembly.

The Iligan MAS AMiCUS Cross-Training was suppose to be a cancelled appointment because of many hindrances along the way. Everything just seemed to disagree with the events; from financial challenges, to Joan's cancelled boat trip and delayed flight, to shortage of travelling time, not to mention the landslides and all. But it is so amazing how God can turn trials and obstacles into blessings. When it is for His cause, God really extends His hands. Amazing are HIS promises that we can freely claim giving us peace amidst the storm.

On the 16th of July, Saturday night, Ronald, Joan and I, were on our way to Iligan City for the Cross Training, despite of the obvious time constraints. The Training would start in the morning of Sunday, July 17 and our flight would be on the next morning at 6:00 at the other side of Mindanao, Davao City. We arrived at Iligan City and stayed at Ptr. Cagas’ residence for the night.

Sunday came.

Some of the youth pose with Joan for the camera.
First stop: Tibanga SDA Elementary School. The Cross-Training for the MAS AMiCUS officers which lasted for three fun-filled hours—5:00 to 8:00 am.

Then at one o’clock pm, the news came. A landslide occurred somewhere between the highway of Bukidnon and Davao City preventing the buses and other vehicles to pass through. The only options were to either take two longer routes which would both take us around twelve hours of travel from Iligan to Davao City. We opted to take the Iligan to Kidapawan route. Now time became a major concern. We needed to leave earlier than expected. We decided to leave right after kuya Ron’s talk.

Second stop: Tibanga SDA Elementary School. This time, it was the Cross-Training for the MAS AMiCUS general assembly. It started at one o’clock in the afternoon. Kuya Ron finished his talk to the youth past two o’clock pm. Fifteen hours more before the flight—and we had to be at the airport check-in area at least an hour before the plane departure.

The Trust Walk activity.
The youth in prayer.
And so at exactly three o’clock, we left Iligan… In your dreams. No, we had to stay because unexpectedly, more than a hundred attendees came to join the Training. More attendees called for a longer and more effort on the part of the MAS AMiCUS officers. We couldn’t just leave them in that kind of situation.

We were finally able to let go of the Training at around five o’clock pm. It wasn’t over yet but we just really had to go and leave the other activities to the MAS AMiCUS leaders. (We thank God for giving them the right spirit and excellence in leading the youth.) We left Iligan City praying for God’s intervention.

Fourteen hours left before the flight.

The Lord declares that He will be honored by those who draw nigh to Him, who faithfully do His service. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee, because he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3.

Third stop: At about seven o’clock pm, we arrived Cagayan de Oro and immediately looked for a van bound Davao. God provided! We finally found a van…with a sleeping driver. It was not until nine o’clock pm that the driver woke up energized and ready for the long drive. The van left immediately.

Joan and I (R-L) at the front seat of the van.
Ten hours left. Will we make it? Anything could happen along the way.

Inside the van, we calculated our travel time. We left at nine o’clock so we would likely arrive Davao City at around five o’clock in the morning (and Davao City is known for its large area. A taxi ride from the Davao City Ecoland Terminal, where we would go down, could mean several agonizing minutes to the airport). If only the van would go fast enough to make a twelve-hour-drive an eleven-hour-drive. If only there would be no stop-overs. If…what if…what  if…. Yes, we did have a lot of “what ifs” but God gave us a settled peacefulness in our hearts. He will take care of everything.

Fourth Stop: We reached Valencia City—past twelve. The van continued on.

Five hours more before the flight.

Fifth stop: The van stopped. A man approached the van.

Four hours and something minutes more before the flight.

The highway cleared of the landslide mud.
Trucks and other vehicles line up to wait for the slow process of passing the landslide affected area.

A pile of landslide mud beside the road.
The driver finally slipped back inside and closed the van door shut. “We’re going through,” he said.

Minutes before the van arrived the crossing to Davao City (short route with landslide) and Kidapawan City, we were informed that the Davao City route was just recently opened enough for smaller vehicles to pass. Praise God!

When I think back of that landslide experience, I am always reminded of how God parted the Red Sea for the Israelites. For us, He parted the landslides!

Sixth stop: The time was around four o’clock am. We stepped down the van into the Ecoland Terminal and paid a taxi to drive us to the airport.

Seventh stop: Davao City International Airport. We checked-in (together with our co-volunteers from Bukidnon) an hour before the flight.

"…we can never be placed in a position for which
God has not made provision..."

Tuesday, the next day, we were informed that that the Davao City route was once again closed….

Delayed!

Story told by: Joan Buncad
Date happened: July 15, 2011

     Kriinngg.
I picked up my cellphone. It was one the of MAS-AMiCUS: Iligan youth leaders reminding me of my appointment to facilitate the Cross-Training for their General Assembly on June 17, 2011. Seven days more before the Cross-Training but I didn’t feel like going. I still had no ideas for the activities and above all, I didn’t have the FARE to and back. But at least I had to try secure a ticket. So on Tuesday, June 12, I booked a ticket using ate Gaelle’s (one of the volunteers) card.
     Denied.
Huh? Impossible! We’ve been using this card for booking tickets so many times before. I tried it again. And again. And again…
     Denied. Denied. Denied!
The MAS-AMiCUS Iligan tried to book me a ticket as well me using their friend’s card but the same thing happened. Denied.
This time, discouragement began to really sink in. But despite of everything, I kept on praying and praying and finding a way to go because I didn’t want to disappoint the youth at Iligan.
Thursday (July 14) came. Still no tickets and no direct flights from Iloilo to Cagayan. Though discouraged, I still kept moving forward, excited of what would happen next. I went to the ticketing booth to buy a boat ticket to Cebu. Guess what? Trip cancelled.
Waaahh! What’s wrong?! I convinced myself to give up. So many tries; all to nought. “You need to go,” a still small voice whispered.
But Lord, even if I get to Cebu City, my situation would still be 50/50. I don’t have plane ticket to Cagayan de Oro. Plus, there’s no boat available! I argued. Tears began running down my cheeks. I was tired and couldn’t understand why God was allowing all these things to happen. After the tears subsided, I called a friend to ask of some possible ways to get to Cebu.
“The only option you have right now is to take a ferry boat to Bacolod then a Ro-ro bus to Cebu,” he said.
Arrrggh! You really want me to take the longer ride, don’t you, Lord? I was now sulking. Fine. But you have to give me more patience and faith. If this is your answer to my prayers, then I trust You.
The trip to Cebu lasted for fifteen long hours. Finally, I stepped out of the bus onto the terminal—starving and without sleep. What now, Lord? No one was around to fetch me.
Three hours ticked by. Who is going to fetch me, Lord? Or do You want me to wait some more? I sighed.
Mrs. Suplig and I in the Suplig residence.
Finally, a nice SDA family came and offered me a ride, lunch and rest at their house. Plus, internet! Wow! Lord, what a surprise! What convenience! My dampened spirit began to brighten. My excitement heightened when the youth leader called me and said that they were finally able to book a plane ticket. My flight was 1 o’clock pm that same day. Praise the Lord! I immediately printed the ticket. After a few hours of rest, although their house was a bit far from the airport, the family once again offered to drive me to the airport. Gratefulness to the family and praises to God flowed through me.
By eleven o’clock am, I was at the check-in counter; two hours early, with a full stomach and a long time to relax and to enjoy the cool environment inside the airport. Finally! Mindanao here I come!
Twelve o’clock. “Flight number…please proceed to the check-in area…” I was kind of drowsing so I didn’t care. But I knew I was one of the passengers mentioned. The announcer continued: “The flight is cancel
led due to…”
The flight is cancelled due to… Flight cancelled. That got my full attention. My flight was cancelled!
Flight delayed. Waiting...
waiting...
Lord, why? I began questioning the Lord again. I don’t understand. I should be at Cagayan at two o’clock because then, we’ll still be travelling to Iligan City for two hours—just on time for the Sabbath…. What is happening?
The flight was moved to four o’clock pm.
     A five-hour-wait! Why, Lord?
“Just trust Me.” That came from the still small voice again.
Okay, Lord. Okay, Lord. I’ll trust You. I began singing Isaiah 26:3,4. Peace came to my heart. God knows what’s best.
At three o’clock we heard another announcement for the delayed passengers to proceed at the counter area. What’s up, now, Lord? I asked—this time, truly trusting Him.
The man behind the counter handed me a free domestic flight card. Free flight! Yeheyyy!
Finally, I understood. This card was my ticket back to Iloilo. God cancelled my boat trip and delayed my travels so I could be on this flight and have a ticket back to Iloilo.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD."
Isaiah 55:8.

The Sabbath was spent at Cagayan de Oro along with Weng and kuya Ron (HCBN volunteers). The Cross-Training was a success. And my faith grew an inch taller than before. We serve a wonderful God!

Thanks to:
The Suplig Family for graciously accomodating me at their home.
The MAS AMiCUS Iligan Youth for booking my plane ticket and the wonderful experience with them.

Sacrifice?

Some say being a volunteer (giving God all) calls for a great sacrifice. Not really. It's more like an adventure!

Roller-coaster ride?

Bungee jumping?

Skydiving? You name them...

Okay, it's literally the greatest adventure there is. Period! No, we may not be able to do all these "extreme sports" but God's work is more extreme than this.

Ah, euphoria!

Skeptic still? God said, "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:6)

To be involved is to believe.

Warning: Volunteering for God is addictive when taken in large doses.
